Discovery Time in Reception
Our children love their learning in Red Class. The curriculum covers 7 different areas of learning (communication and language, physical development, personal, social and emotional development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design) and these area lay the foundation for future learning and subjects. If you were to visit our classroom, you would see children receive five whole class inputs on the carpet. These sessions focus on a particular skill eg the sound ‘s’ or the maths concept ‘one more than’ and then the children go off to activities in the class and outside of the classroom. We call this Discovery Time; it’s officially known as continuous provision. In Discovery Time children embed these skills as well as previously taught skills through a range of different activities including games, crafts, role play and tasks linked to early writing and early maths. Our children show great resilience in focusing on tasks and the adults skillfully enhance their learning through interacting, modelling and challenging following observations.
