Mandarin in Year 6

At Willow Lane, we embrace the teaching of MFL (Modern Foreign Languages) with our younger children (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) experiencing a term of Spanish, French and German. In Key Stage 2, the children study a language in more depth and at our school we learn Mandarin in order to broaden children’s horizons and learn about a culture far from Lancaster. This language is spoken by over 1 billion people in the World and uses a different script as well as sounds to our own language. The children in Year 6 have been studying it since Year 3 and it is a pleasure to see them enjoying this subject as they identify the the symbols, write their pinyin (how it would phonetically be written in English) and then write the meaning.
