OPAL helps schools create exciting, inclusive and imaginative play opportunities for every child, every day. We want our lunchtimes to be much more than simply a break from learning. They are a valuable opportunity for children to explore, create, be active, make friends and have fun!

What does OPAL look like at Willow Lane?

Through OPAL, we are making better use of our wonderful outdoor spaces and providing children with a wider range of opportunities to play. This includes den building, digging, sand and water play, imaginative play, exploring nature and using a variety of loose parts and everyday materials to create their own games and adventures.

We encourage children to play outside in all seasons, making the most of our fields, playgrounds and outdoor spaces, whatever the weather!

Why is play so important?

High-quality play helps children develop important skills that support them both in school and beyond. Through play, children learn to:

• Be creative and curious – using their imagination, exploring ideas and solving problems.
• Build friendships – learning to cooperate, communicate, negotiate and resolve disagreements.
• Develop confidence and resilience – taking on challenges, managing risks and learning from mistakes.
• Stay active and healthy – enjoying movement, fresh air and time outdoors.
• Become more independent – making choices, taking responsibility and leading their own play.

Above all, OPAL is about helping children feel happy, included and excited about coming to school.

How can parents and carers help?

We want every child to enjoy outdoor play throughout the year, and families can help by making sure children come to school ready for all kinds of weather!

Our active school uniform is designed to be comfortable, practical and suitable for active learning and play. You can find full details on our school uniform page.

We also ask families to help by ensuring children have:

• A suitable coat every day, particularly during the colder and wetter months, so they can continue enjoying outdoor play.
• Hats, gloves, sunscreen depending on the weather. Sunscreen and hats are essential in summer sunshine.
• Donations of wellies, allowing children to access the field, sandpit and other outdoor areas even when the ground is wet or muddy.
• Clearly named clothing and footwear, helping us make sure belongings find their way home.
